The Ultimate Sweet Potato Casserole: A Holiday Staple

Every Thanksgiving and Christmas meal deserves iconic side dishes, and this easy Sweet Potato Casserole stands out as the quintessential holiday recipe. It’s designed to bring all the festive cheer and comfort to your gathering, ensuring your guests feel truly celebrated. Sweet potatoes, with their inherent sweetness and earthy notes, are a star in our holiday spread. Whether it’s this delectable casserole, tender Sweet Potato Biscuits, or glistening Candied Sweet Potatoes, they are a beloved family favorite and a must-make tradition.

Our simple Sweet Potato Casserole recipe masterfully blends the natural sweetness of yams with classic autumnal spices like cinnamon, warm brown sugar, and a hint of pure vanilla extract. The crowning glory is a lavish pecan streusel topping that adds an irresistible crunch and depth of flavor. The process is straightforward: prepare a batch of perfectly spiced mashed sweet potatoes, quickly mix together the streusel, and let the oven do the rest. The result is a harmonious balance of sweet and savory that will undoubtedly have your guests reaching for a second helping. It’s truly that good, offering a comforting embrace with every spoonful.

Preparing Sweet Potatoes: Boiling, Baking, or Microwaving

Achieving the perfect creamy base for your sweet potato casserole begins with properly cooked sweet potatoes. There are several effective methods for softening your sweet potatoes, each with its own advantages. The most common techniques involve boiling or baking. While boiling is often quicker, baking can sometimes yield a slightly sweeter, more concentrated flavor, as it caramelizes the natural sugars.

Boiling Sweet Potatoes

Boiling is a fast and efficient method for cooking sweet potatoes, making it ideal when you’re pressed for time. Simply peel and chop your sweet potatoes into even-sized cubes. Place them in a large pot, cover with water, and bring to a boil. Reduce the heat to a simmer and cook until the potatoes are fork-tender, usually about 15-20 minutes. Drain them thoroughly and return them to the hot pot (off the heat) for a few minutes to allow any residual moisture to evaporate. This step is crucial for preventing a watery casserole.

Baking Sweet Potatoes

For those who prefer a deeper, more roasted flavor, baking your sweet potatoes is an excellent alternative. Wash your sweet potatoes and prick them several times with a fork. Place them directly on a baking sheet or wrap them in foil, and bake at 400°F (200°C) for 45-60 minutes, or until very tender when squeezed. Once cooled slightly, simply scoop out the soft flesh and proceed with the recipe as directed. This method often results in a richer base for your casserole.

A Quick Third Option: Microwaving Sweet Potatoes!

When time is of the essence, the microwave offers a remarkably quick way to cook sweet potatoes. This method is incredibly convenient for softening potatoes without heating up your kitchen. Here’s how:

Wash and thoroughly dry each sweet potato.
Pierce each potato several times with a fork to allow steam to escape during cooking.
Wrap each potato in a damp paper towel.
Place the wrapped potatoes on a microwave-safe plate and microwave on high for 5 to 10 minutes, or until fork-tender. Remember to flip the potatoes halfway through cooking for even results.

Regardless of your chosen cooking method, the goal is tender, easily mashable sweet potatoes that will form the creamy foundation of your perfect holiday casserole.

Essential Sweet Potato Casserole Ingredients

You’ll be delighted by how effortlessly this sweet potato casserole comes together. We believe a truly exceptional sweet potato casserole includes the delightful crunch of pecans, so our streusel is generously packed with them! Each ingredient plays a vital role in creating the rich, comforting flavors of this holiday classic. (A complete, printable recipe card with precise measurements is available at the end of this post.) Here’s a closer look at what you’ll need:

Sweet Potatoes: The star of the show! Aim for about 3 large or 4 to 6 medium sweet potatoes to get the right consistency and volume for your casserole base. Choose firm, unblemished potatoes for the best flavor and texture.
Unsalted Butter: Used generously in both the creamy mashed sweet potato filling and the irresistible streusel topping. Unsalted butter allows you to control the overall saltiness of the dish.
Brown Sugar: Provides deep, molasses-rich sweetness. Dark brown sugar will give a more intense caramel note, while light brown sugar offers a milder sweetness. Either works beautifully, so choose according to your preference.
Eggs: Act as a binder for the sweet potato filling, contributing to a lovely, slightly fluffy and cohesive texture once baked. Lightly beaten eggs ensure smooth incorporation.
Cinnamon: The quintessential autumn spice, lending warmth and depth to both the sweet potato mash and the streusel topping.
Vanilla Extract: Use pure vanilla extract for the most authentic and vibrant flavor. It enhances the natural sweetness of the potatoes and complements the other spices.
Salt (Kosher or Sea Salt): A crucial flavor enhancer. A pinch of salt balances the sweetness, bringing out all the incredible tastes in this amazing dish.
Half and Half (or Whole Milk): Adds a wonderful richness and creaminess to the mashed sweet potatoes. While whole milk can be substituted, half and half will undeniably yield a more luxurious texture.
All-Purpose Flour: The structural base for our crunchy streusel topping, ensuring it bakes up perfectly crisp.
Pecans: A non-negotiable for us! We prefer to start with pecan halves and then give them a rough chop for varied texture, but you can also leave them as halves for a bolder crunch. Toasting them lightly before adding to the streusel can further enhance their nutty flavor.
Miniature Marshmallows: An optional, yet traditional, finish for those who adore a sweet, gooey, toasted marshmallow layer on top of their casserole.

How to Prepare This Easy Sweet Potato Casserole

Crafting this delightful sweet potato casserole is wonderfully straightforward, coming together in just a few simple steps. Let’s walk through the process:

Cook the Sweet Potatoes: Begin by preparing your sweet potatoes. You can boil, bake, or microwave them until they are fork-tender. For boiling, peel and cube the potatoes, then simmer in water for about 20 minutes. Drain thoroughly and return to the hot pot to dry out any excess moisture. If baking, prick whole potatoes and bake at 400°F (200°C) until soft, then scoop out the flesh. For microwaving, pierce, wrap in a damp paper towel, and cook on high for 5-10 minutes.

Prepare the Creamy Sweet Potato Filling

This is where the magic happens, transforming simple sweet potatoes into a velvety smooth base.

Mash the Sweet Potatoes: In a large bowl or the pot you used to cook them, combine the cooked sweet potatoes with the softened butter. Mash them together using a potato masher or a hand mixer until mostly smooth. You can leave some small lumps for texture if you prefer.
Incorporate Remaining Ingredients: Add the brown sugar, lightly beaten eggs, half and half, ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt to the mashed sweet potatoes. Mix thoroughly until all ingredients are well combined and the filling reaches your desired creamy consistency.
Spread into Baking Dish: Transfer the sweet potato mixture evenly into a prepared 2-quart or 9×13 inch baking dish (sprayed with nonstick cooking spray) and set aside.

Craft the Decadent Streusel Topping

The streusel adds that perfect textural contrast and nutty flavor.

Whisk Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, brown sugar, salt, and ground cinnamon until fully combined.
Add Wet Ingredients and Pecans: Pour in the melted butter and add the roughly chopped pecans. Stir everything together until the pecans are evenly coated with the flour mixture, creating a crumbly texture.
Spread Streusel: Generously sprinkle and spread the streusel mixture evenly over the top of the sweet potato filling in the baking dish.

Bake the Casserole to Perfection

The final step brings all the flavors together in a golden-brown masterpiece.

Bake: Bake the casserole in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for 25 to 35 minutes, or until the streusel is golden brown and the filling is heated through and slightly set. If you choose to add marshmallows, sprinkle them over the casserole about 15 minutes before it is done baking, and continue cooking until they are lightly golden brown and perfectly gooey.
Cool and Serve: Carefully remove the casserole from the oven and allow it to cool for a few minutes before serving. This brief cooling period helps the casserole set, making it easier to serve and ensuring the flavors meld beautifully.

Sweet Potato Casserole with Marshmallows: A Touch of Nostalgia

For many, a sweet potato casserole isn’t complete without a glorious, sweet layer of toasted marshmallows. This classic topping adds a delightful gooey texture and an extra burst of sweetness that brings back fond childhood memories. We completely understand the appeal! In fact, when preparing this recipe for our own Thanksgiving celebration, we often make it half with the crunchy pecan streusel and half with the beloved marshmallows. This thoughtful approach ensures that every guest can enjoy their preferred topping, making everyone happy.

Pro Tip for Marshmallows: If you’re adding marshmallows, sprinkle them evenly over the top of the casserole during the last 15 minutes of baking. Watch closely and cook until they are beautifully golden brown and delightfully soft, but be careful not to burn them!

Storage and Make-Ahead Information

Planning ahead for your holiday meal or dealing with delicious leftovers is simple with this sweet potato casserole. Proper storage ensures you can enjoy this dish for days to come, and make-ahead options save you precious time on the big day.

Refrigerator Storage

Any leftover sweet potato casserole can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. This ensures it stays fresh and delicious for subsequent meals.

Freezing Instructions: Baked vs. Unbaked

This casserole freezes beautifully, allowing you to prepare it well in advance or save extra portions.

If Already Baked: If your sweet potato casserole with pecans has already been baked, allow it to cool completely. Wrap it tightly in two layers of foil, then place it in an airtight freezer-safe container or a heavy-duty freezer bag. It can be frozen for up to 2 months. To reheat, thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Pull it out at least 60 minutes before baking to allow it to come to room temperature. Bake at 350°F (175°C) until thoroughly heated through, which typically takes about 30 minutes.

Before Baking: To prepare the casserole ahead for freezing, assemble the sweet potato filling and spread it into your baking dish, but do not add the streusel topping or marshmallows, and do not bake it. Cover the casserole tightly with two layers of foil, and store it in an airtight container in the freezer for up to 2 months. When ready to bake, thaw overnight in the refrigerator. Remove it from the fridge at least 60 minutes before baking to allow it to reach room temperature. Prepare the streusel topping fresh, sprinkle it over the thawed casserole, and bake at 350°F (175°C) until heated through and the topping is golden, about 30-40 minutes (adding a few extra minutes since it was frozen unbaked).

Make-Ahead Tips for Stress-Free Holidays

To ease your holiday cooking stress, this sweet potato casserole is an excellent candidate for advance preparation. You can get most of the work done a day or two before serving, leaving you more time to enjoy the festivities.

Simply prepare the mashed sweet potato filling and the streusel topping separately, as instructed in the recipe, but do not assemble them into the casserole dish. Allow the mashed sweet potatoes to cool completely, then transfer them to an airtight container and store in the refrigerator. Place the prepared streusel topping in a separate ziploc bag or airtight container and also refrigerate it. Both components will keep well for 2 to 3 days.

When you are ready to bake, assemble the casserole by spreading the sweet potato filling into your prepared baking dish, then evenly sprinkle the streusel over the top. Since the ingredients will be chilled, you may need to add an additional 5 to 8 minutes to the baking time to ensure it is thoroughly heated through and the streusel is perfectly golden brown.

2 eggs (lightly beaten)
½ cup half and half (or whole milk)
½ teaspoon ground cinnamon
1 teaspoon vanilla extract

½ teaspoon kosher salt (or sea salt)
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
2 cups pecans (about 8 ounces, roughly chopped)
6 tablespoons unsalted butter (melted)

Marshmallows (Optional)

1 to 2 cups miniature marshmallows

Instructions

Add sweet potatoes to a large pot filled with water. Bring to a boil over high heat and then reduce heat to medium and simmer potatoes until fork-tender, about 20 minutes. Drain well and return to the hot pot (off of heat) to allow any extra moisture to cook away.
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Spray a 2-quart or 9×13 inch baking dish with nonstick cooking spray and set aside.

Prepare the Filling

In a large bowl or the pot the sweet potatoes cooked in, mash the potatoes and softened butter using a potato masher or hand mixer. (You should have about 5 cups of mashed sweet potatoes at this point.)
Add the remaining ingredients (brown sugar, eggs, half and half, ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, and salt) and mash together until your desired consistency is achieved. You can make yours completely smooth or leave some texture.
Evenly spread the filling into the prepared baking dish and set aside.

Prepare Streusel Topping

In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, brown sugar, salt, and ground cinnamon. Add the pecans and melted butter and stir together until pecans are evenly coated with the mixture.
Spread the streusel evenly on top of the sweet potatoes.
Bake the casserole for 25 to 35 minutes or until golden brown on top. Remove from the oven and let cool for a few minutes before serving. If using marshmallows, sprinkle them over the top of the casserole with about 15 minutes remaining and cook until they are just golden brown.
