Southwest Chicken Calzones: Quick and Easy School Night Dinner
As parents, we all know that the transition back to school can be a whirlwind of activity, from juggling schedules to stocking up on supplies. It feels like just yesterday we were enjoying carefree summer days, and now, with school starting next Wednesday, the rhythm of routine is swiftly approaching. My boys’ back-to-school shopping is almost complete, but there’s always more to do, especially when it comes to supporting our incredible teachers and ensuring every student has what they need to succeed.
Each year, teachers provide a “wish list” for their classrooms. These lists are crucial because they outline items not covered by the school’s budget, ranging from essential learning tools for students to basic supplies that teachers need to run an effective classroom. It’s truly heartwarming to see how parents in our community step up to help. We live in a wonderfully diverse area, with families from various financial backgrounds. To foster an environment of equality and ensure no child starts the year at a disadvantage, many of us make an extra effort to contribute double, triple, or even more of the requested items. This collective generosity helps bridge the gap and ensures every classroom is well-equipped for a successful academic year.
Our school’s uniform policy has always resonated with me. It establishes a sense of equality, allowing all children to feel part of the same community, regardless of their family’s financial situation. Similarly, I believe it’s profoundly important for every student to begin the school year with the necessary supplies at their desk. This foundational equality empowers children, boosts their confidence, and allows them to focus solely on learning, rather than worrying about what they might lack compared to their peers. It’s about creating a level playing field where every child has the opportunity to thrive from day one.
Beyond direct donations, I’ve always been interested in school fundraising programs – those initiatives where a percentage of your purchases goes directly back to the school. Recently, I discovered the Tyson Project A+ program, and I must say, I am incredibly impressed. What makes this program truly stand out is its inherent flexibility. For every eligible label clipped and sent in, Tyson donates 24¢ to your school. The beauty of this system is that the school decides precisely how to utilize these funds. Whether it’s for new playground equipment, much-needed art supplies, technology upgrades, or even supporting sports programs, the money goes where it’s most needed. It’s a common-sense approach that genuinely makes a difference, turning everyday purchases into opportunities for tangible school improvements.
Identifying participating products is incredibly easy, thanks to clear labeling on the packaging. As a busy mom who frequently relies on Tyson products for convenient family meals, I can quickly see how clipping these labels can accumulate substantial funds for our school. Think about it: a box of crayons might cost around 50¢, meaning just two labels can cover that! But the potential goes far beyond small classroom items. Collectively, these small contributions can fund larger projects, extracurricular activities, or even essential educational resources that directly impact students’ learning experiences. It’s a simple, yet powerful way for families to contribute without adding extra financial strain.
Getting your school involved or checking its current participation status is a breeze. Just head over to the Tyson Project A+ website and click on “Look Up Your School”. If your school is already enrolled, that’s fantastic! You can start clipping and sending labels right away. If not, don’t worry – simply click on “Enroll Now!” to quickly get your school registered for the program. The process requires only basic information about your school, which you can usually find on their official website. I strongly encourage you to take these few easy steps if your child’s school isn’t already participating. Once enrolled, earning money for your school becomes an effortless part of your grocery routine.
Tyson is truly a remarkable company, and their commitment to education through programs like Project A+ is commendable. Beyond their philanthropic efforts, their products are a staple in my household because they consistently deliver on quality and, most importantly, make my life significantly easier. For busy weeknights, preparing nutritious and delicious meals can often feel like a race against the clock. That’s where Tyson’s line of Grilled & Ready products truly shines. You’ll recognize them by their distinctive green packaging – a beacon of convenience in the frozen foods aisle!
These pre-cooked chicken options are incredibly versatile and form the perfect foundation for countless quick meals. For these incredibly flavorful Southwest Chicken Calzones, I specifically used either the Grilled & Ready® Fully Cooked Frozen Oven Roasted Diced Chicken Breast or the Grilled & Ready® Fully Cooked Frozen Southwestern Chicken Breast Strips. Both options are fantastic, saving valuable prep time and allowing you to get a wholesome, homemade dinner on the table in a flash. The tender, perfectly seasoned chicken eliminates the need for any complex cooking, letting you focus on assembling and baking your delicious calzones. It’s the ultimate solution for a satisfying meal when time is of the essence, especially after a long day of school and activities.
These Southwest Chicken Calzones are not just easy; they are bursting with flavor and make for an exciting twist on traditional weeknight meals. Imagine perfectly baked pizza dough, golden and slightly crispy, encasing a warm, zesty filling of seasoned chicken, creamy cheese, and hearty black beans. It’s a handheld meal that’s both comforting and satisfying, appealing to both kids and adults alike. Plus, the individual portions make them perfect for lunchboxes the next day or a quick grab-and-go snack. They’re highly customizable too; feel free to add corn, bell peppers, or a hint of spice to truly make them your own. This recipe leverages the convenience of Tyson chicken to create a meal that tastes like it took hours, but comes together in a fraction of the time.

Southwest Chicken Calzones
Southwest Chicken Calzones – a delicious and easy dinner made with Tyson chicken! Perfect for busy weeknights.
Ingredients
1/2 cup salsa
4 oz cream cheese, softened (light cream cheese works well)
1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (Mexican blend or pizza blend)
1 1/2 cups cooked chicken, chopped (Tyson Grilled & Ready chicken is ideal)
1/2 cup canned black beans, rinsed and drained
Prepared pizza dough (consider 10-minute pizza dough or bread machine pizza dough)
Olive oil, for brushing
Instructions
Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).
In a medium-sized bowl, combine the salsa, softened cream cheese, and shredded cheese. Mix well until everything is thoroughly incorporated.
Stir in the chopped cooked chicken and the rinsed black beans. Set this delicious filling mixture aside.
Divide your prepared pizza dough into six equal portions. On a lightly floured surface, roll each portion out into a circular shape, roughly 6-7 inches in diameter.
Spoon approximately 1/2 cup of the chicken mixture onto one half of each dough circle. Be sure to leave a clean border around the edges of the dough, about an inch wide, to allow for proper sealing.
Carefully fold the empty half of the dough over the filling to create a half-moon shape. Pinch the edges firmly together to seal the calzone, preventing any filling from escaping during baking. You can crimp the edges with a fork for a decorative touch and extra seal security.
Place the sealed calzones on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Using a sharp knife, slice two small steam vents into the top of each calzone. This allows steam to escape, preventing the calzones from bursting and ensuring a crispy crust. Finally, lightly brush the tops of the calzones with olive oil for a beautiful golden finish.
Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes, or until the calzones are golden brown and cooked through. Baking times may vary slightly depending on your oven and dough thickness, so keep an eye on them.
Serve your hot Southwest Chicken Calzones immediately. They are fantastic on their own, but if you desire, offer extra salsa and a dollop of sour cream or Greek yogurt on the side for dipping. Enjoy your easy and flavorful dinner!
