The 5 Fall Shoe Trends I’m Actually Wearing at 60
I bought a gorgeous pair of boots two falls ago. Pointed toe, great heel, the kind of shoe that photographs beautifully and makes you feel about six inches taller walking into a restaurant.
I wore them to dinner in downtown Minneapolis and took them off in the car on the way home.
That was the last pair of shoes I ever bought without asking the only question that matters now: can I walk in these? Not “can I stand in these for 20 minutes and then sit down.” Can I walk through an airport, teach a class, run three errands, and still want to be a person by 4 p.m.?
Here’s the good news about fall 2026. The trends are finally on our side. Designers are leaning into softer leathers, lower profiles, real footbeds, and shapes that have been around long enough to prove themselves. Almost everything trending right now is something you can walk miles in, which means you get to have the cute shoe and the working feet at the same time.
I’ve pulled the five trends I think are worth your money this season, plus what to look for in each one so you don’t end up with my boot situation.
1. Birkenstock-Inspired Clogs: The Slip-On With Actual Arch Support
If there’s one shoe that has taken over my fall rotation, it’s the clog. I keep a pair by the door because they’re the shoe I can shove my feet into when I’m running out for coffee or dropping something off. No bending over, no laces, and no decision-making at 7 a.m.
What makes this trend actually work for us is the footbed. The Birkenstock-inspired styles have a contoured cork or molded footbed with real arch support built in, which is the opposite of what a flat, flimsy slide does to your feet after age 50. Your arches flatten a little as we age (nobody tells you that one), and a shoe with structure under the middle of your foot is the difference between feeling fine at the end of the day and feeling it in your knees.
Look for a covered toe, a suede or soft leather upper, and a sole with some grip if you live somewhere that gets wet leaves and early snow like I do. Wear them with jeans and a chunky sweater, or with thick socks once it gets cold. The sock and clog combination stopped being controversial a few years ago, and I’m relieved.

These are some of my all-time favorite clogs. My kids gifted me a pair to wear around the house, and I’ve bought another color since then because I love them so much!

2. Loafers and Mules: Pulled Together Without Trying
Loafers are having a serious moment and the softer, the better this year. Think suede, crinkle patent, and butter-soft leather instead of the stiff, structured versions that used to give you a blister across the top of your foot before you got to the parking lot.
I love a loafer in fall because it does the thing I’m always chasing: it makes an outfit look intentional without asking anything of me. Jeans and a loafer read pulled together. Trousers and a loafer read like you have your life together, even on the days you don’t.
Mules are the same idea with the back removed, and they’re the easier on and off option if you’re in and out of the house all day. One honest note. A backless shoe makes your foot grip a little to hold it on, so if you’re walking any real distance, go for the closed-back loafer and save the mule for the day that’s mostly sitting, driving, and looking good.
What to look for: a cushioned insole (most brands say so right on the listing), a low block heel of an inch or less if you want a little lift, and a flexible sole you can bend with your hands. If the shoe won’t bend at all in the store, your foot is going to fight it all day.
Rothy’s Penny Loafer
These Rothy’s penny loafers are so comfortable. They have a soft knit upper with a contoured insole and heel padding for extra support.

3. Ballet Flats, But With Support This Time
Ballet flats are back for the fourth or fifth season now, and I’ll be honest, I resisted this one. The ballet flats of the early 2000s were basically a piece of leather with no structure whatsoever, and my feet still remember.
The 2026 versions are different. Brands have caught on that women want the shape without the punishment, so you’re seeing padded footbeds, a tiny bit of heel lift, mary jane straps that actually hold your foot in place, and materials with some give. A strap is the upgrade I’d push you toward, because it takes the work away from your toes.
The other reason I like a flat this time of year is how easy it makes getting dressed. It goes with jeans, it goes under a midi dress with tights, and it takes up almost no room in a suitcase when you’re traveling for the holidays.
One thing I’d skip: the completely unstructured, paper-thin version in a slippery fabric. Cute in a photo, rough on your feet by hour two, and no support anywhere.
Rothy’s Pointy Flats
These flats are worth every penny. Comfortable, supportive, lightweight, and washable!

4. Cute Sneakers You’ll Actually Walk In
The slim, retro sneaker is still the shoe I recommend more than any other, and this season the options are better than they’ve ever been. The chunky dad sneaker took a backseat to low-profile styles a few years ago, and now the racing stripes, suede panels, and 90s color combinations are everywhere.
Here’s why I love this category for us specifically. A retro sneaker is the one trending shoe you can wear with a dress, with jeans, with trousers, and on a two-mile walk, all in the same day. It’s the shoe that lets you say yes when someone suggests walking somewhere instead of driving.
I do want to make one distinction, because I get this question constantly. A fashion sneaker is not a training shoe. The flat, thin-soled retro styles are great for walking around, running errands, and looking good, but they are not what you want for a strength workout or a long treadmill session. Keep a real pair of cross-trainers for the gym and let these be your everywhere-else shoe.
Look for leather or suede over canvas if you want them to survive a Midwest fall, and consider sizing up a half size if you like a little more room with a real sock.

5. Ugg-Inspired Boots and Slippers: Cozy That Goes Outside
I live in Minnesota, so I want you to understand that I take this category seriously.
The shearling-lined boot and slipper trend has grown way past the tall boot we all wore in 2005. Now you’ve got clog slippers, scuffs, mini boots, platform versions, and slip-ons cozy enough to wear inside but sturdy enough to walk out to the mailbox in January without regret.
This is the trend I’d tell you to buy for your actual life, not for a photo. The pair I reach for most is the one I can wear around the house all morning with my coffee and then wear out to the car without changing. A rubber or lugged outsole is what makes that possible, so check for it before you buy. A pure indoor slipper with a soft sole is lovely, but it’s an indoor slipper, and it’ll be soaked the first time you step in slush.
One more tip from a woman who has ruined a pair: spray them with a suede protectant the day they arrive, before you ever wear them out. Takes five minutes and doubles their life.

What I Look For in Any Fall Shoe Now
This is the checklist I run every single shoe through before I buy it. It has saved me a lot of money and one very expensive lesson.
Can I bend it? Hold the shoe in both hands. It should flex where your foot flexes, at the ball, not fold in half in the middle.
Is there anything under my arch? Run your thumb along the inside. A totally flat footbed means your foot is doing all the work.
How wide is the toe box? Your toes should have room to spread out. A shoe that squeezes them into a point is how bunions and neuromas get worse.
What’s the heel height, really? An inch to an inch and a half is my sweet spot for a shoe I’ll be in all day. Anything higher is a shoe with a time limit, and that’s fine as long as I know it going in.
Would I take a walk in these? If the answer is no, I’d better love them for something specific, like a wedding.
That last one is the whole test. I want my shoes to let me keep moving, because movement is the thing I’m protecting at 60.
So, can a shoe be cute and comfortable at the same time in 2026? Yes. That’s the whole reason I wanted to write this one, because for a lot of years the answer was no, and we were all quietly choosing between our style and our feet.
You don’t have to make that trade this season. Buy the clogs, buy the flats with the strap, get the sneakers you’ll actually walk in, and give away the pair that’s been sitting in your closet hurting you since 2019. Life’s too short for shoes you have to take off in the car.
PS. If your feet have been aching more than they used to, don’t write it off as “getting older.” Half the time it’s the shoe, and the other half it’s worth a conversation with a podiatrist. Both are fixable.
